I recently had a chance to catch up with 2012 PF Perry Ellis and his mom Fonda for a quick “10 questions with”.
Todd Kirby: Is your 4.0 GPA still in tact?
Perry Ellis: …
Fonda Ellis: Yes it still is. He is on the National Honor Society and was voted Secretary for next year.
TK: You had written in a journal entry that you wanted to see Kansas vs. Kansas State, Kansas State vs. Oklahoma and Oklahoma vs. Kansas this year. Did you get to see those, and did any of the three stand out to you?
PE: Yes, I attended all those games. I think the KU vs. K-State game stood out the most because of the rivalry between them.
TK: You rarely lose basketball games (either in High School or AAU), what goes through your mind on that rare occasion?
PE: Winning is addicting, I really like to win and want to win. In my high school career I have only lost 3 games. When we lose it frustrates me because I am so used to winning, but you got to move on and keep working hard.
TK: When discussing the recent Jayhawk Invitational, Shabazz Muhammad singled you out as a good player. What was the level of play like against him and Winston Shepard?
PE: It was great competition and an exciting atmosphere. I played against Shabazz and Winston several times and got to play with Shabazz in Houston at the AAC game.
TK: Who is the toughest player you’ve ever faced?
PE: There are a lot of great players.
TK: You are up to 225 lbs now, what’s your exercise regimen like?
PE: I eat very healthy and make sure I get a lot of protein in my diet. I drink a lot of water too. I either wake up at 5:30 a.m. and shoot at the YMCA before school or shoot after school. I work with a trainer three evenings a week.
TK: Is your list still Kansas, Kansas State, Wichita State, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Memphis? Did the coaching change at Oklahoma affect them being on your list?
PE: They are still on the list. Assistant coach Crutch (Chris Crutchfield) came to open gym in April and Coach Kruger has called and e-mails my mom. I stil have the same six on my list. Tubby Smith called me tonight though.
TK: What is your favorite shoe to play in?
PE: I like a lot of shoes really, but currently wearing Hyperdunks.
TK: You seem to take the recruiting process in stride even though you’ve been getting offers since your freshman year. Does the spotlight not bother you at all?
PE: No, not anymore. When I was a freshman it was harder to deal with but I am really getting used to it. My parents and coaches really help me stay focused. Our motto is stay “Hungry and Humble”
TK: You wear #34, is there any significance to that number?
PE: Was a big fan of Shaq when I was 6 years old and that was his number back then.
Big thanks to Perry and Fonda for answering my questions. Perry moved up from #26 to #19 in the latest Scout rankings for the class of 2012 (released today).
