In 2010, Kentucky played exhibition games in Windsor, Ontario, which is just across the river from Detroit, Michigan. A teenager in the stands pointed his iPhone at the UK players gathered at the bench.
“I remember having the worst zoomed-in picture of the Kentucky team. I remember snapping the picture, but I don’t know if I ever imagined being in the group.”
That photographer was Mychal Mulder, a junior-college transfer who arrives billed as a good shooter. As it relates to basketball and not to photography.
“I always had aspirations of playing at a high level of college basketball, and my goal was to play at Division I. But I don’t know if back then I thought I’d end up at such a high level. Also, I wanted to be a better student and get my body right, I was a little bit skinny.”
Kentucky was really late in offering Mulder, and lucky for both UK and Mulder that he waited to accept anything. He says he wanted he didn’t want to around like his coach did, he wanted to take something as soon as he had it.
Calipari says, “What he does is he can shoots the ball. He’s a catch and shoot guy.”
Mulder believes his ability to shoot comes from his self-esteem. “It’s probably a lot of confidence. So I think I have a high level of confidence. That’s probably why.” Mulder says.
