• I'm at a loss. What happened yesterday was a level of ineptitude I didn't think I'd see anytime soon. I don't know that a team could fail that badly if they tried to. While the defense put forth a valiant effort for a while, eventually they wore out and it turned into a laugher.

Not that I can blame the defense. This is three straight weeks they've had to kill themselves on the field, while the offense is busy lighting farts (not really, but it would be much more entertaining to watch than this pathetic mess). But the fact is, they can't go a full 60 minutes at this rate, nor should they have to.

This season started with tempered expectations, and the WKU game didn't do much to raise them. But, the last few games have taken morale straight to the bottom. Even the blind-faith butt-kissing fans are starting to wonder what is going on, and that says something. It won't get any better, either, because by this point, the team's psyche is probably shot all to hell. It will be hard to recover any positive momentum, short of a group trip to a therapist.

So what happens? A few people have said this is pretty much rock bottom, and as far as on-field performance, I'd have to agree. Managing only 17 passing yards is both a travesty and an insult to the game of football. While we've become somewhat accustomed to poor offensive showings, I don't know that it has ever looked as outright hopeless as it did against South Carolina. For me, that's when I start to really get pissed, when the team acts like it isn't even trying anymore.

But what can we do? Personally, I think a coaching change is the answer. While mid-season coaching changes never work, this is a lost season anyway, and I'm all for sacrificing the rest of it with a new coach, if for no other reason than to get some work in a new system, and maybe get the fans on board for next year. Especially the season ticket holders; I can see a severe decrease in ticket sales next year if this dumpster fire isn't extinguished soon. When money stops coming in, that's when the administration takes notice.

Speaking of the administration, what is a reasonable expectation for Mitch Barnhart? Should we expect him to sit contentedly by (the most likely outcome, to me)? Should we expect him to fire Joker this week (I seriously doubt it)? Should we expect him to say Joker won't be back next season (I wish)?

Honestly, I don't see anything happening until after the Jacksonville State game. We knew going in this was a brutal three game stretch, and the team went 0-3, just like we figured they would. The problem is, the team wasn't competitive for any of the last 12 quarters. Some are saying the bye week comes at a bad time for Joker, but I disagree. Sure, he has to face criticism, but he has two weeks to get his guys on the same page and prove he has the ability to coach. The team can attempt to get some morale back, and prepare for a much lower-tier opponent. Although, if the team isn't on the same page six games in, I don't know that an extra week will do anything for them. We shall see, I guess.

Here's the caveat: if the team doesn't show marked improvement against Jacksonville State, and win convincingly, I think Joker & Company will be out of the frying pan and into the fire. And rightfully so. Honestly, at this point I'm expecting a loss, but I hope I'm wrong.

So what do we have the right to expect? A mid-season firing? A vote of confidence? Knee-jerk reaction says send them all packing and get a new face in here, but rational thought says wait until after the Jacksonville State game to evaluate the team's performance, and in turn, the head coach's future. But we warned, if Kentucky craps the bed against JSU, the wolves will get vicious in a hurry.

And I will be near the front of the pack.

I'm not sure what a win against Jacksonville State would even prove, but I hope we could at least win that game. There is a real likelyhood though that we have won our last game this season.

It's got to the point that I'm seriously considering making t-shirts, bumper stickers, or whatever else to sell that all the proceeds go towards a brand name coach's salary and us fans could take over the job of our future football program. How would that be for a movie. It would show something about us UK fans even if we have an admin that won't do anything or care about football. Would anyone be interested in supporting those efforts?

I seriously ask the UK nation though to stop going to the games and sending any money to this administration until they fix things. It's not about supporting the players...it's about a better football program future! I'm sorry that the current players have to go through this, but it is what it is. Please stop going to games and giving them money. It's sending the wrong message to the admin...

I am going to have agree. Fans should stop going to the games. Of course there will be those who say we should still support this team, I would argue the only to support this team is to get them real coaches who know how to win. The only way to get that is to hit the University where it hurts...the pocket book. Also where are all the positive petes who called me a fair weather fan when I said Kentucky would be lucky to win 5 games. bigbluenation7 seemed convinced that this team would win 9 games and told the rest of us we were bad fans if we didn't agree. Where is he now? I was wrong, this team will be lucky to win 3 games. I think the worst thing that could happen is this team pulls out 4 wins and we have to give Joker another year to tear down this program.

Yea i agree. You can still be a real fan but boycott the games and watch at home. It's called a sacrifice for the betterment of the program. I also remember Bigbluenation7 saying all that stuff about this years team was great and we will win 8-9 games for sure and that we could really compete for a SEC title. LOL, i knew he was delusional making that prediction.

Why would I pay $70 a ticket, plus gas, parking, and concessions to watch a subpar product? Anyone who pays $100-plus to sit through that mess is crazy. I can root for the team from home just as effectively, and not have to spend money to support a bad staff in the process.

People like you are the reason Kentucky football will never be consistently mediocre. Do you think Alabama fans would put up with this? Or Florida? Florida fans were booing last year and boycotted their bowl game and they were 7-5. Go to Florida message boards now and see how polite they are after being pummelled by Alabama and LSU. You may think you are being a good fan, in reality you are prolonging this tragedy to the game of football. I will still watch and I will still cheer for them to win, but giving money to the University will keep this crap going.

It's all about a very simple dichotomy. I'll try to break it down as best as I can. You have football fans and you have basketball fans (now, this isn't trying to say that you can't be both, I am both, as are most of you, but bear with me.) I've polled a fair share of both, people who like football better than basketball and vise versa. It's about what you would expect 90-95% in this state are basketball first, but there are some of the opposite that exist. When I ask them this one simple question, this is where I think football fans differ big time from most UK basketball and "both sport" fans in general...

WOULD YOU GIVE UP 15-20 YEARS OF BASKETBALL TO BECOME A CONTENDER IN THE SEC IN FOOTBALL?

All football fans say that they would sacrifice the next 10-20 years in basketball to get competitive enough to one day compete in football. I know... Asinine right? In horse racing, they call this throwing good money at bad money. Why on earth would I put a crisp 100 dollar bill on a horse that's 100/1 when its all but certain it may never win a title... Get my reference?

Football has 3 major problems. First, the BCS. If you lose one game and you are done with your national title aspirations. One sloppy game to rival Louisville first game and its over. Or hell, you can run the freaking gauntlet in the SEC (see Auburn with Cadillac and Ronnie Brown) and not make the championship. Second, the SEC is too freaking good to take a chance like this. With the land mines that wait to derail your championship season every game, its an absolute miracle to come out undefeated (WE ALMOST beat Auburn last year). Thirdly, and thank God for this, UK fans are basketball crazed and the basketball fans and both sport fans would roll over in their grave before they'd let the basketball team slide out of contention.

Contrast that with basketball, where we went 1-7 on the road in conference last year, but come tournament time, when the chips were down, we lost the national title game. UConn/Butler doesn't count.

And for anyone of you who thank, "But we're UK! We could let the program slide and come right back?" You honestly believe that? With as much parity as is in the system today? Really? That's like saying one day a team like Gardner Webb could come into Rupp Arena and actually beat us! Wait a second...

You got to keep fanning the flames, and a good way to look at it. What is a historically great program that let things slide and has been 15-20 years recovering. The dreaded armpit to the North.... Indiana.

I don't know about you, but for this basketball 75% Football 25% fan, I think you are crazy to throw basketball under a bus.

A big name or mid name prolific coach/recruiting genius is what we desperatley need. The real football talent is outside our borders. Hire a coach that can go and find it. Isn't that one of the main reasons we hired Cal?

Bobbie Petrino at Louisville/Brian Kelly at Cincinnati/Skip Holtz at South Florida=it is possible and achieveable if the right coach is hired.

Why not here in Lex why not now! Not next year but now! Make a staement that failure is unacceptable.

Open your pocketbooks and find a coach that already has credibility. Not someone waiting in the wings.

I appreciate Joker being an ex-player/alumni all that stuff, but please stop homering us to death and give us someone from the outside who can build something from nothing. Because that is what it is now......nothing.

I have (im)patiently thought about what the problem is. I know, it invariably rests with the head coach and - that IS- why he gets paid the big bucks. But, my greatest frustration is with the quarterback situation. I have no doubt Morgan is a great kid, and a smart kid (young man). But, his talents are not at quarterback. I think he would be much better fit for a tight end position. Just think about things from this perspective - one I haven't heard anybody anywhere talk about. Rich Brooks did bring things to respectibility with UK in most all games towards the end. He had Joker calling plays and Randy as the quarterback coach. With this coaching staff, they were very successful with Mike H and Andre W., but when Morgan took over for Mike - the offense flatlined!! Last year Joker and Randy were coaching Mike H. and things went well - until Hartline was suspended and - Morgan had a(nother) very poor outing in the bowl game after a month of practice time. This year, Morgan is the quarterback - Randy and Joker are the coaches - (despite spring practice and fall camp with 5 games under his arm this year) and he still isn't doing well at all! It is just true. I say this, saying Morgan IS a very intelligent and fine young man, but, he IS NOT a quarterback. Again - under the old coaching staff - they were successful with all quarterbacks except Morgan. Under the new coaching staff they were fine with the old quarterback (MH). And too, the offense IS the same! I was upset when Moss left, but understand why, as he saw he was not going to play. In the past, Randy has consistently been able to obtain marked and dramatic improvement in quarterbacks after four full games. Woodson and Hartline both followed this pattern. Morgan has had 10 or 12 games (along with tons of practice time) and hasn't made any progress. To me, this is the key. And too - the only reason I can think of the O-Line is so bad - is because someone doesn't know what blocking calls to make!! THese guys were much better last year, they were picked to be among the best in the conference by other SEC coaches, and now they can't figure out their assignments. I know there is a new O-line coach, but, did the calls change, who makes the calls for the O-line, and why the confusion? Charlie (Somerset)
