Suspected Arsonist in Custody Following Fire at Auburn’s Toomer’s Corner

Thanks to surveillance footage, police have made an arrest following an intentional fire at Auburn’s famed Toomer’s Corner.

Auburn Police have released the following statement:

On September 25, 3016, at approximately 12:15 am, the Auburn Police and Fire Divisions were notified of a fire at Toomer’s Corner. Upon arrival, it was determined that one of the Toomer’s oak trees, located at the intersection of W. Magnolia Ave and College St. was burning due to the toilet paper being set on fire. AFD units arrived within minutes to extinguish the fire. Witnesses at Toomer’s Corner identified a suspect, who was immediately detained and taken into custody by police on an unrelated charge of public intoxication. The suspect is a twenty-nine years old male from Auburn and is not affiliated with Auburn University. He was transported to the Lee County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $500 bond. AU officials are evaluating the damage to the Toomer Oak tree and the case remains under investigation by Auburn Police. Addition charges are anticipated.
