• John Calipari has accomplished quite allot over his 24 year head coaching career. At Umass he led the Minuteman to their first ever final four (it happened, deal with it). He then led the awful New Jersey Nets to a playoff appearance after just 2 years. At Memphis he won a crap load of games including an NCAA record 38 wins during the 2007-2008 season (This happened too, continue to deal). In only 2 years at UK, Claipari won 61 games and reached a Final Four. This all may sound very impressive, but there is one accomplishment that has escaped Coach Cal throughout his career.

John Calipari has never won the "big one". The closest he ever came was against Kansas in 2008. John's critics blame the loss on Memphis' inability to make free throws as it seemed to be the only weakness the Tigers had that year. The truth is Calipari has never been as close to winning a title before that year....or since.

The question is then, if Cal doesn't win the title with THIS year's team, Will he ever?

Will Cal ever have a team as talented as that 2008 Memphis team? Even as much talent as Cal is bringing in at UK now, I don't believe Cal will coach a better team that that one. With that great mix of returning and incoming talent he still couldn't close the deal. 2 years ago he had Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, Miller and Patterson. That team had an incredible regular season but in the tourney he could only get as far as the elite 8.

This year Calipari will have Miller, Lamb, Jones, Davis, Teague and Gilchrist to go for Calipari's first national title. I am of a firm belief that if Coach Cal doesn't win a national championship with this team, he never will.

That isn't to say that this team is the best team he has ever coached or ever will. Coach Cal isn't getting any younger and he only has 7-8 years left of coaching. The other reason is this UK team matches up well with almost any team. UK's length this year will give numerous teams problems as well as their athleticism. Those ingredients are exactly what you need when in the tournament, when you will have to play all types of offenses and defenses. A likely combination he will never see as a head coach.

UK matched up terribly with UConn, but Uconn matched up terribly with Louisville and UK beat Louisville by 15....at Louisville (not really relevant but fun to mention). John Wall's UK team matched up poorly with West Virginia, but in my opinion would have matched up great with Duke (see Duke vs. Arizona 2011 tourney game).

I am in no way saying that if Cal never wins a title that makes him a bad coach. Dan Marino never won a super bowl and he's regarded as one of the greatest Qb's of all time. John Chaney and Eddie Sutton have a combined 1,500 wins and they never won a national title, doesn't make them terrible coaches either.

How about those that say "Cal has only been at UK for 2 years?" Do you realize that recently 3 college football programs in the SEC won national champions all with coaches who have been there 3 years or less? LSU won a national title with 3rd year head coach Les Miles. Alabama won with 3rd year head coach Nick Saban and Auburn won the year after with 2nd year head coach Gene Chizik. This will be Calipari's 3rd year.

There are 2 things to note here. This is all depending if the NBA's Collective bargaining agreement keeps college students out of the NBA for just one year. If it goes to 2 years, never mind I ever wrote this. Secondly, I honestly think UK will win #8 this year so this won't even be an issue...right?

Mack, whoever you are, perhaps you should be the coach. It seems like you know more than Calipari does. LOL.

I sometimes wonder why i even write anything. maybe i should just write the title, since that's the only part people read.

The last line of the artice "I honestly think UK will win #8 this year so this won't even be an issue"

In 24 years he hasn't won a title yet, is it really that far fetched to believe it may never happen? Then again, Boeheim coached 27 years until he won his one and only title. Dean Smith coached for 21 years before his first champ. These perhaps are the valid points you were looking for?

There is always an element of luck when it comes to winning the national championship. The odds are that Cal will win at least one of them.

I read the whole thing, including the last line. I'm with you, I'm hopeful UK will bring home #8 this year, but if it doesn't happen this year absolutly doesn't mean it will never happen. Maybe it was the big bold print that got me.

True, bad luck and good. Who would have thought WVU would have shot 0% in the first half from 2-point range in 2010 and still won the game, or for that matter, one of the worse shooting teams in the tourny shoot lights out from 3-point range? The stars had to line up just perfectly for both those things to happen. Cal coached that game right, it was extreamly lucky for WVU to come out on top... or bad luck for UK to fall, depending how you look at it.

I'm a Firm Believer that Coach Cal will always get Elite talent, win tons of games, dominate the SEC, and challenge for NCAA supremacy just about every yr while he is at UK... A title will be just icing on the cake....

Not sure where you get the whole "in 24 years" thing, but Coach Cal just completed his 19th year as a head coach..and is entering his 20th season.

Cal will probably not even win the SEC this year. Vanderbilt will be the preseason favorite to take the league, just like Florida was predicted (and won) last year. Talent is great, but talent and experience will trump it almost every time!

People said that if Cal does not win with Wall and co that he will never win one. They only got to the Elite 8. The next year, people said that the team will be lucky to get to the Elite 8. They got to the Final Four.

In an article, every statement counts, and not just the headline or the punchline like Mack suggested that only it should count. Stating a belief that Cal will never win one if he does not win this year is just not a smart thing to say.

Takes even HOF coaches several chances usually before they win the big one...

Vanderbilt is favored to win the SEC this year? Is this guy serious? How can UK be ranked #2 in the country and not be favored to win their own conference? Must be the same person making these idiotic remarks about Mack's articles...

And some people need to get a life. Mack wrote an article about his opinion and gave perfectly legit reasons for his opinion (even gave a few more in the opinion section). Every reviewer has the right to agree or disagree but to criticize the author as if your opinion is always correct is ignorant. I don't always agree with his opinions but I do enjoy reading about them because he is entertaining and brings up several good points (I do agree with a lot of what he says, though, and for the record, I do not agree that if Coach does not win it this year, he never will) and that is all that matters. It's frustrating to see such critical statements because it really makes our fan base look bad. Good job, Mack! I figured you needed someone to say something positive because you have been doing well!

I agree. Who is this guy? Kentucky will obviously be preseason favorite to win the sec, if not the whole thing.

Mack Perkins is absolutely right. The harsh truth is that if Cal doesn't win the national championship this year, we need to fire him and find a coach who can close the deal. It's not a pleasant thing to say out loud, but Mack is simply giving voice to what most of BBN are quietly thinking.

Cal will never coach a better team than his 2008 Memphis Tigers, and he couldn't get it done with them. This year will be his last best chance. As Mack nicely put it, it's now or never. And if Cal fails once again, with all the resources Kentucky is able to provide him, we can't waste any more time, like we did with Tubby. It's not enough to be relevant. It's not enough to be in the conversation. We need a coach who can deliver the title.

Thank you, Mack, for your honesty and courage.

UK is favored to win the SEC and will do so. Experience? How many Vanderbilt players have Final Four experience? UK has more talent and has just as much if not more experience.
