Point Guard Battle: Marquis Teague vs. Anthony Hickey

Anthony Hickey was a 2 sport star at Christian County High School in Kentucky for 4 years.

It seemed like every time you went into Rupp Arena, there was the dread-locked, quick, fearless point guard which took the state by storm his senior year.

Last season, Hickey led Christian County to a Sweet 16 title and captivated the state enough to win Mr. Baskeball over McDonald's All American and Louisville forward Chane Behanan.

The big question that seems to be undervalued is, "Why didn't Coach Cal even give Hickey a look?" That just isn't me saying it, that is a lot of basketball people I talk to around the state.

Marquis Teague was picked as the next great point guard in the Calipari corral so there wasn't a need for another, or at least that is what I am guessing.

Now, Teague has come around lately, but many were wondering about his ability to lead this team earlier in the season which led me wishing Kentucky had a true backup to help Teague get through his rough patch.

That guy could have been Anthony Hickey.

Hickey has taken over the starting point guard position at LSU and has far exceeded anyone's expectations for the "small" guard.

The 5'11" Hickey is averaging over 30 minutes per game for the much improved Tigers and has turned into the floor leader they didn't have a year ago.

Lets take a look at the comparison of Teague and Hickey and what we have to look forward to in this matchup on Saturday.

Hickey is listed first, Teague second.


As you can see, Teague and Hickey's scoring are almost identical at 10 points per game.

The biggest difference, besides Teague's superior free throw shooting, is Hickey's assist to turnover ratio is 4/2 and Teague's is 4/3.

Could this be another case of letting an instate talent go elsewhere without being recruited by the flagship university and it comes back to bite us in the end?

I seriously doubt it, but Hickey sure would look good backing up Teague right now.
