• Attachment 2069Everyone talks about a programs inability to win national championships with the poorly tagged "one and done" players. Alright let's just be honest here, people say that John Calipari and Kentucky will not win a national championship with players who leave for the NBA after one year of college. For a change, let's look at why Calipari will win the elusive National Championship by recruiting the absolutely best talent possible.

Before we dive into that, I want to give my opinion on players who leave for the league after one year. I am for it, I am behind the players and say go for it. The NBA has developed the one year to the NBA rule and players have to abide by those rules. If someone has said they have to play a year of college (or be a year removed from high school) before they can go earn the big bucks, then so be it.

Play at college for a year and then go earn the big bucks. If you have what it takes to go earn millions in the NBA, then by all means go!

Attachment 2071With those short term players, how can Calipari win the NCAA Championship? It's simple. He has the most talented players possible playing for a team they are proud to be a part of and following a vision they understand. If you have the best talent and that talent plays unselfishly and with focus, you have poised yourself to win a championship.

Just look at last year. Do you think that the three Wildcats who were lottery picks wanted to lose? Do you think they lost to WV because there were only 5 years of college experience between them? No, they lost because they had a bad game.

The best talent gives you the best chance to win. The fastest car has the best chance to win. The fastest car can't always win either.

Attachment 2070The problem that Calipari and his team has to overcome isn't maturity, or a lack thereof. The challenge that Calipari has to overcome is not having one bad game when it matters. I take talent over maturity any day. And sooner than later, Calipari and that talent will have the luck needed to not have an off game when it matters most; the NCAA Tournament.

Recruit the talent, understand they might leave for the NBA after a year. Continue to guide them to the NBA if that is the best time for them to go. I'm behind the methodology, Coach Cal.

Let's also not forget that in his first year Coach Cal and the Wildcats did win a SEC Regular Season Championship. Oh yeah, they also won the SEC Tournament Championship as well. Then they traveled to the Elite Eight before having a bad game. Sure, the season would have been more successful with banner eight, but all in all it was still a highly successful season.

      Word !
Coach Cal will get it done. And all this talk about one and dones is bull. The biggest reason we had 5 guys go in the first round was because of the success UK had last year. People forget that Wall was the ONLY player in that class that was considered a one and done guy. If UK loses 10 games...then John Wall is probably the only one that for sure goes and that was expected before the year started. Cousins played himself into a lottery pick and no one expected that. Patterson could have went the year before. I think both Bledsoe and especially Orton stay at UK if they don't have the on court success that they did. Those guys just parlayed the success and the hype that surrounded UK last year into 1st round draft picks.

There ain't going to be that kind of turnover every year. Depth will be built and Cal will get it done eventually. :-)

i could not disagree with you any more. none of the new recruits will be wearing blue proudly, they will be wearing blue because that will translate to green. they will not be unselfish, they will be completely selfish. they are wearing the jersey of the greatest program in basketball history and they are only doing it due to the check that will be given to them when they're done. since these players have no respect for the name kentucky, they will be as selfish as possible in order to get into the nba.

plus, i am a kentucky fan but not a calipari fan. i think he is dirty and a cheater and should not be allowed to coach college basketball. because of his dirty recruiting history, when we win a national championship (when, not if.) there will be an asterisk or the title will be stripped.

      sincerely,
      a concerned fan

One and dones will never win a national championship. Just look at Michigan's fab five. They were the best recruiting class that will ever be and after two years they couldn't win it all. On the other hand look at programs like North Carolina. Thoes players stay three or four years and thats why they have two championships in this century, unlike Kentucky.

Coach Cal is merely being the recruiter that he is, which is simply the best in college basketball. Early departures go with recruiting the best of the best. Would have loved to have had any or all of this year's NBA guys back, and we can all make arguments that at least a couple should have stayed. We can also suggest that Coach Cal could have swayed a couple of them if he had tried. But do any of us want to argue that we don't like having the best players in college basketball desiring to wear Kentucky Blue? I'll take 35-3, an incredible season and amazing players to watch any day over the Tubby and Billy years. The NBA and the NCAA set the rules on who can go to the NBA and when. I want to see the very best players playing for the Cats every year, and I'm thankful we have a coach who can deliver and develop them. I do think it's going to be a challenge to bring all that young talent together each year and get everybody on the same page, but, if anyone can do it, Coach Cal can.

It's true he's blazing a trail no one else has blazed, but let's give him credit for doing what he can do and a few seasons to see how the journey plays out. The guy has poured heart and soul into the job. Even if the NBA changes the rules and makes players who come to college stay a minimum of two or three years, here's betting Coach Cal will still get the best of the best available. And that means we won't be playing against them on the other teams, and other schools will hate us because Kentucky will be landing the best as it should be doing.

Life as a Cat basketball fan probably won't ever be to every Big Blue Lover's liking, but we're back in a big way, folks. I would much rather be hated than be irrelevant as we had been a good many years before Coach Cal. Go blue!

35-3 and some of you ppl are silly enough to sit here and say 1 and dones can't get it done??? Are you freaking kidding me? 5 players entered the draft from UK and 5 players went in the 1st round of the draft, mind you that is the fisrt time in the HISTORY of the NBA draft that has EVER happened!!! If UK would of made it all the way to the championship game and lost in the finals you band wagon fans would still be saying the same thing, "1 and dones can't get it done..." 300+ teams in D1 hoops and Cal's 1st yr he makes it to Elite 8 and thas not good enough? Bite me!

Like I said, one and dones CAN'T get it done, the fab five could beat any of UK's recruiting classes and after two years they couldn't win a national championship. Have fun when your program is on probation, again.
