It’s time to get a look at the 2017 recruiting class John Calipari put together for the 2017-18 basketball season. Not including Hamidou Diallo, there will be 7 new faces on the court for the Wildcats this season.
Calipari, as usual, lost a lot of talent from last season to the 2017 NBA Draft, forcing him to find a plethora of talent to rebuild his team. First, let’s meet on of the fresh faces we’ll see this season.
Gilgeous-Alexander is an ESPN four-star, 6-5, 185 lb point guard out of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Originally committed to Florida, Gilgeous-Alexander opted to open his recruitment up again and chose to commit to Florida’s SEC foe, Kentucky. While Gilgeous-Alexander was not chosen as a McDonald’s All-American like many of his future teammates, He did represent the World Select Team at the 2017 Nike Hoops Summit and played for Canada’s Junior National Team in the 2016 FIBA America’s Under-18 Championships. It’s unknown if Gilgeous-Alexander will be a one-and-done like many of John Calipari players, he has the potential to be, but he also looks like a player that could give the Wildcats a solid few years, too. It all depends on how he develops over the course of the season.
Though only given the four-star rating by ESPN, Gilgeous-Alexander was ranked 33rd in the ESPN Top 100. Gilgeous-Alexander chose the Wildcats over Florida, Syracuse, Texas and UNLV.
