• With his release from North Carolina State, 2011 big man Joseph Uchebo is going to be one of the biggest recruiting commodities during this Spring Signing Period.

With Sidney Lowe leaving, and new coach Mark Gottfried coming in, Uchebo didn't feel too comfortable with a new staff or people. Thus, he requested his release.

"The first time the new staff called me, I got the feeling they didn't want me at NC State," Uchebo explained. "Coach Gottfried was working on bringing in new players, and it was like he didn't want me. It wasn't the same feeling Coach (Sidney) Lowe brought to me."

Either way, the Nigerian product is looking in new directions. In fact, some schools are scheduled to watch him play Monday.

"I don't really know what schools are interested yet, but my coach told me there are some coming to watch me Monday," Uchebo said.

Despite not knowing which coaches are coming, when asked about if he thought Kentucky would be there, Uchebo knew an exact answer.

"I would anticipate (Kentucky) to be there. I do know they called and talked to my coach once," he replied. The timing of the call wasn't specified, though.

The past week or so has been a tough ride for Uchebo. From a feeling of hospitality and family at NC State, he now enters a world of uncertainty and full of questions regarding his recruitment. Because of this, he wants to find a good home for the future.

"I want a good relationship with the coaches and people around the team," Uchebo said. "But the biggest thing is playing time. I don't want to go to a place with a lot of big men."

That sounds like it fits a void with Kentucky, right?

After failing to reel in Stan Simpson and Braeden Anderson, the idea of adding a post player is a necessity.

Uchebo also agreed that he was interested in the 'Cats.

"I would listen to Kentucky. They have a very nice program," he complimented.

Nevertheless, Uchebo definitely wants to take visits before he decides where he will attend college.

"I will take some visits when I narrow my teams down. I want to make sure I fit in with everything at the school."

As if Uchebo wasn't getting looked at enough before this weekend, his performance in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional Game rose some eyebrows for coaches.

If you aren't aware, the 6'9" senior had 13 points and 21 rebounds in the all-star game.

Uchebo also feels that rebounding is his strong point and when he was in Nigeria, rebounding was what the people were looking for.

"I'm going to have to rebound in college. I have always been a rebounder. In Nigeria, that was what the coaches wanted. They didn't really care about scoring, just for me to play good defense and rebound the ball."

"In the United States, everyone wants offense to go with my rebounding," he said. "My skills are still developing because of the differences in the countries.

Uchebo also acknowledges that fact that basketball in America is tougher and harder to play.

"The game is tougher over here. Everybody plays really hard. You see a lot more injuries than in Nigeria because of that. Everyone just works twice as hard."

Despite his time in Nigeria, he thinks he has worked hard and is shading toward the American style.

With the absence of post players on the Kentucky roster next year, along with Uchebo's desire to have playing time, it looks like Kentucky could really be in the running for this kid.

He has the talent, and there is a very good chance Kentucky could pay him a visit this week.

    Stay tuned for more updates.

Sounds like he could be a fit. At 6'9" he is not that big really to be a true center but with the rebounding a defense he could work well. There will be multiple players on our team bigger than him. We wouldnt need him to score much as long as he rebounds great. If he could get those 10+ points and 10+ rebounds a game then that would be great. I wouldn't take him over say a Lacey but he has what looks to be a huge wingspan and seems to have good potential.

I agree w/ the Mod. I think that with Harrellson gone, we are desperate to fill that rebounder position - just like the post position. I am very excited about the upcoming year. Last year's team had talent, but this year's team had true skills. That's the most important difference of all.

Hmmm, may be he should talk with the UNC sports staff, they seem to be able to "seek and keep!"

I stay in NC. I can tell you the early favorite schools are Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee, Florida, Memphis, and Maryland. I don't see UK as a significant player. I personally know the family ( his Aunt). Kid has grown to 6'11" and has great upside.

Well good luck with those schools. Florids ia the only really decent school there and they are still significantly overshawdoed in the SEC by UK. Then again if you want to be one of the top players on a team you go to those schools because at UK every player is that talented and you just another one on the list that is talented. We will take him but we wont die without him.

Got to be a Louisville fan or most likely a Memphis fan. Jealousy is a stinky cologne.

I wasn't going to reply to your childish post at first, but it seems that you lack some education and facts. I'm actually a Western Kentucky alum. Please understand UK isn't for everyone. I suspect you reside in Kentucky. If this is the case, I can see why you think UK is the only place top recruits should go. Please wake up. The majority of the country outside of Kentucky don't have this narrow view of things.

Isn't it amazing that Kentucky wasn't getting anywhere near the talent they are getting now before Calisleazy got there. It's amazing what WWW can do. It's just a matter of time before it all comes crashing down and he bails once again leaving Kensucky's program just as mediocre and irrelevant as it was when he got there.

Come to Memphis and watch how the CITY not just the UM embraces you! No other city embraces a University & its players like Memphis! Just ask the NBA MVP...D-Rose! Additionally, where else will you be playing in a NBA arena every night, in front of pro players and scouts! Guess we need to send little Penny to convince you!

What did i say that wasn't true then? If your asking if i think Western Kentucky is an elite program then i'd say NO. I mean they have a good history but there not really that relevent anymore.

Gotta be a Memphis fan on this one. Kentucky was more relevent in its worst years than Memphis ever thought about being. Cal is great but we have had success like this before. You know Rupp, Hall, Pitino. No one coach could bring down UK just ask Eddie Sutton.

Well first of all Memphis is just a second class generic Kentucky. Memphis fans are good but UK fans are at the top of the list. In Kentucky the biggest thing is UK basketball and even outside of Kentucky and around the country and the world we get embraced by fans. Is there Memphis fans in Korea? in Turkey? in China? I doubt it. Rupp is also a great off campus arena made just for UK's basketball team and will soon be expanded. Also you must be crazy to think NBA scouts are not at UK games. Nice try but where is the facts to back it up.

You stay in NC yet you list schools he has no interest in. The players in this game are Wake, Fl St and UK. I think you is blowin smoke.
