Louisville fans, you have been searching for a while for someone to lead you into battle; a person who rides a horse with a flaming torch shouting inspiration with every breath. Well, I don’t believe you’ll ever find that dude, but there is a guy I believe you all should pay more attention to. His name is Mark Ennis, but you may know him by his twitter name, @mengus22.
Mark is a writer for bigeastcoastbias.com and is an avid twitterer. He has close to 40,000 tweets and has only been tweeting for 3 years. That’s like 40 tweets per day. He follows all things sports and thinks it’s fun to do research (nerd alert). If Mark doesn’t know about it, then it doesn’t exist. So he is educated, entertaining and a Louisville fan. One of these things is not like the other.
When he’s not writing epic short stories about Villanova or Depaul being worthless Big East teams, he tries his hand at radio. He was our guest on ESPN 680 and we invited him on initially because he was a Louisville fan. We soon realized he was a well-rounded sports fan who was also a fountain of knowledge. For the past 6 weeks I have had him on my Friday night podcast and he knocks it out of the park every time.
So why am I writing something nice about a Louisville fan? Because he should be the one who Louisville fans, the enemy, look to for guidance. As a UK fan I get tired of Louisville fans always using an imaginary probation as a primary crutch for their anti-UK arguments. They need someone to steer them in the right direction and Mark is that bus driver.
For instance, the first time I really ever communicated to Mark it was a heated twiscussion. I may have said at one point that UK and the SEC were better the Big East in basketball last year. Mark to exception to that, and basically called me a stupid person. I then defended my ridiculously irrational statement with ridiculously rational points. I had been down this road with a Louisville fan before and I knew how this story would end: With epic cursing, name calling and a twitter block. Instead, Mark replied “that’s a much better argument”. He still didn’t agree, but he was open to at least hear the other side’s side.
We UK fans always fight and argue with Louisville fans during basketball and football season. Isn’t it time we give the Louisville fanbase a chance to win an argument every once in a while? I mean it has been pretty easy lately when arguing who’s the better team. Mark is like the Ville’s version of Brett Favre. He gives them the best chance to win against the mighty blue mist. Of course they will still lose these arguments, but at least they will be more fun.
So I say to you Louisville, call your local provider and demand Mark Ennis, or just follow him on twitter. He brings facts and passion to the table. And sometimes those ingredients are useful, cards fans. Howie Lindsay, it’s time to say goodbye. There’s a new sheriff in town.
