Thread: what will have to happen to get our next national championship?

ive been thinkin bout how our team is going to be having 4 expirenced juniors and 6 talented well rounded freshman next year, in addition to our two instate players (who should be alot better by next year) i was wondering if we could win the championship next year? or maybe in 2011-2012? also how many one and dones do you guys think are on our list of recruits this year?

My thoughts are that we Will win it this year and next. I can't think otherwise considering the talent we have and the knowledge of the system that our players from '09-'10 have. OK, the way I see this team is tougher on the inside. Much improved field goal shooting team. More pure scorers in Lamb, Knight and Poole. People will say that this is premature with the losses we have had, but I am looking at the vast amount of talent + the knowledge of the system and number 1 recruiting class. My ONE and DONE's: Knight, Kanter and Jones.

I'm not so sure that Kanter is a one and done player. A lot of next year will depends on the NBA negotiations. Some are saying that the outcome of that could force some players to stay in college for an additional year.

if theres a lockout after this upsoming season then theres no doubt about it, we will win the 2011-2012 championship! as for this year my personal thoughts are that we will at least reach the final four, but winning the championship will depend on if miller liggins and dodson will be able to step up and lead the younger guys like patterson did. if we have three leaders sharin the ball and takin the smart shot then the younger guys will follow suit and it will be almost like they've been here longer then they have.

Yeah I have heard those same rumors. In a normal year I see Kanter as a ONE AND DONE. The point you just made could also help us to win two in a row as I noted in my previous post. You take these players -Harrellson and + Gilchrist,Teague & Moultrie for 2011 and that is one HECK of a TEAM. A team that could quite possibly be the best team to walk out on the floor of RUPP. Yeah Yeah I am sure I will take some FLAK for that, but I have always heard if you're gonna dream.....DREAM BIG! CATS gonna hang another banner. Wait and see.

Wow, that would be an incredible team next (2011-2012) year! Sheesh, that's almost hard to imagine.

the next two seasons we're gona party like its 1996-1998!! 3 golden years for uk basket ball and now theres gona be another 2. the only thing i'll regret the next two years is if we dont play duke, nc, louisville and uw in a tournament, whether it be the maui invite or the big dance we're plow right through everyone!!

It takes 3 things to win a national championship. Good players, good coaching, and good luck.

Let me expound on the concept of good luck. There are some who have the philosophy that we make our own luck. And we certainly do contribute to our own success or failure. But if you make it, it isn't really luck. Luck happens and there are going to be things that happen to us to all of us which we can't prevent. However, we can control how we react to those circumstances. For example, World war II happened. Adolph Rupp didn't cause it, and was powerless to prevent it. He did get some good recruits, and they kept getting drafted into the military service, and he kept getting more good recruits, and they kept getting drafted. (It was a whole different kind of one and done.) This probably hurt Kentucky's record a bit durring the war years. But then the war ended. The soldiers were discharged and came back to school to get their degrees and play out their elgibility. Remember three things: 1. Time spent in the military service doesn't count against the NCAA's 5 to play 4 rule.. 2. We could have 30 players on scholarship then. 3. The NCAA had allowed freshmen to be elgible for varsity play due to the war taking players in the military. They hadn't got around to revoking this rule by the 1945 season and Coach Rupp had brought in a fine group of freshemn that fall. Suddenly Kentucky had a lot of really good basketball players. The first golden age of Kentucky basketball began.
1945-46 28-2 NIT champions
1946-47 34-3 lost in NIT finals
1947-48 36-3 NCAA champions, Kentucky's 5 starters played on the Olympic championship team
1948-49 32-2 NCAA champions
Over that four year period Kentucky went 130-10, won 3 major championships, and our program was permanently elevated. One more note on this, BOTH the NIT and the NCAA were big deals in those days. Each tournament selected only 8 teams back then. That meant a maximum of 16 teams went to both tournaments. Sometimes it wasn't that many, sometimes a team got to play in both tournaments in the same year.

It`s the same as it`s always been, and it`s pretty simple to me! Just play good basic BB every game.If you look at last years losses the basics were not there.

Ha ha is this a serious question? Kentucky will never win a national championship with a bunch of one and dones. You know what Kentucky needs? Some leadership from upperclassmen. Oh don't get me wrong, I'm sure Kentucky will run the SEC but come tournament time the Wildcats will play like the little boys that they are. My prediction: A 30 win season followed by a sweet 16 loss. Calipari did a great job of grabbing top recruits but how can you expect to be better the next season when you lose the majority of your starters each year? And how pray tell did Kentucky not get a championship this year? Could it be that Calipari just isn't that great of a coach? Awesome recruiter yes but that is about it.

Delvolio, comment #2, what are you delusional? Using that logic what was the reason Kentucky didn't win the championship THIS year? Cmon man get your head out of the sand. Look at the number of Kentucky players in the draft this year and ask yourself how in the heck did Calipari not win a championship this year? I have an answer to that question but you won't like it: Calipari can't do much other than recruit... but oh what a great recruiter he is! Too bad they don't give out national championships for top recruiting classes, eh?
