Baylor Blocking Texas A&M from SEC

The Big 12 is all but lost, but Baylor looks like they are trying their last stand of keeping it together.

Baylor has filed a lawsuit vs. Texas A&M..and the SEC has responded with a press release this morning.

Statement from Dr. Bernie Machen, Chair, Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors:

After receiving unanimous written assurance from the Big 12 on September 2 that the Southeastern Conference was free to accept Texas A&M to join as a new member, the presidents and chancellors of the SEC met last night with the intention of accepting the application of Texas A&M to be the newest member of the SEC. We were notified yesterday afternoon that at least one Big 12 institution had withdrawn its previous consent and was considering legal action. The SEC has stated that to consider an institution for membership, there must be no contractual hindrances to its departure. The SEC voted unanimously to accept Texas A&M University as a member upon receiving acceptable reconfirmation that the Big 12 and its members have reaffirmed the letter dated September 2, 2011.

So now we wait on Baylor...geez....you win one football game you aren't supposed to win and see what happens??

I think WV would be a great addition to the SEC. I would also like to see NC State and Georgia Tech join.

Re: Baylor Blocking Texas A&M from SEC

The Big 12 held a conference call today and it sounds like only 1 school will waive their rights to sue...and they are looking to leave too.

    This from ESPN.com

During Wednesday's conference call of the Big 12's board of directors, the source said it was made clear that the SEC was unwilling to accept the Aggies until the rest of the Big 12 schools waived their right to sue. The confusion arose from a letter that Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe sent to SEC commissioner Mike Slive on Sept. 2, in which Beebe stated that the Big 12's board of directors -- not the individual schools -- wouldn't pursue litigation.

"This is the first time to my knowledge that a conference has been requested to waive any legal claims toward another conference for any damages suffered with a membership change," Beebe said in a statement Wednesday. He added that the waiver "did not and could not bind the individual member institutions' governing boards to waive institutional rights."

During Wednesday's call, the source said Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin asked if the schools would waive their right to litigation and only one -- Oklahoma -- agreed to do so. Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State would not, the source said.

There is still hope for the Aggies' SEC membership if Oklahoma were to decide to remain in the Big 12. During the call, Oklahoma stated that it was exploring its options and would decide soon whether it will commit to the Big 12 or not.

Re: Baylor Blocking Texas A&M from SEC

New ESPN.com report is saying that Baylor won't budge until Oklahoma decides what they are going to do first.

The SEC will have to drop its request for all nine remaining Big 12 members to waive their rights to sue the conference and Texas A&M if it wants to admit the Aggies immediately, according to a source -- a step Baylor isn't ready to take.

Otherwise, if the SEC sticks to its demand, then it won't get at least one member to agree -- namely, Baylor, which won't buckle until it knows what Oklahoma plans to do, a source with direct knowledge of the situation said.

Oklahoma, meanwhile, has no timetable for reaching a decision on whether to stay in the Big 12 or pursue a possible move to the Pac-12, according to a source with knowledge of Oklahoma's decision-making process. Last Friday, university president David Boren said the school would evaluate all of its options.

Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione isn't against being part of a 16-team conference if that's the direction Boren decides, although it's not seen as ideal, the source said. The source said Oklahoma wouldn't have division on the process.

An Oklahoma decision to stay in the Big 12 would offer Baylor more long-term security.

A source with knowledge of Baylor's situation said the Bears' first choice is to stay together with the remaining nine schools and pursue a 10th for expansion.

Meanwhile, Texas and Texas Tech made clear Thursday that each school has waived its legal rights to sue the SEC and Texas A&M over the Aggies' departure, per the SEC's request. Oklahoma has waived its rights as well.
