Bar Fight Involving EKU and UK Players Led to Relationship Between Dean Hood and Mark Stoops

drew barker punch

Remember that bar fight a few years ago that involved UK quarterback Drew Barker and some Eastern Kentucky University players?

The aftermath of that incident in Richmond led to a relationship between then EKU head coach Dean Hood and UK head man Mark Stoops.

Now, Hood is part of Stoops’ staff at UK.

Here are more details from the Courier-Journal:

When a bar fight between several EKU and UK football players and subsequent incident between the teams at an EKU dorm made headlines in January 2015, it was unlikely the head coaches at either program envisioned the turmoil to help lead to a future job opportunity.

But for UK coach Mark Stoops and former EKU coach Dean Hood, the way the two coaches handled those incidents, especially in advance of the teams meeting on the field that fall, helped strengthen a mutual respect already forming due to their northeast Ohio ties.

“We had that incident where we had a little issue down in Richmond. I thought he was phenomenal how he handled that,” Hood said. “He reached out to me (before the October 2015 game) and said ‘Hey, I’m going to tell my players if there’s any pushing, shoving, any signs that this is a lingering thing with what happened over the summer, they’re out of there. This is about football.’”
