• The Sporting News made another ballsy move by adding another freshman to their college preseason All-American team. If you recall last year they put Harrison Barnes, a freshman from North Carolina, on the list and college basketball critics were up in arms. Well, at least half were. Some said it was preposterous to add a player who has never played a minute of collegiate ball to an All-American list (Those same purist probably think replay in Baseball compromises the integrity of the game). Yet others, like me, said Barnes was good enough to make the team and will be a top tier player at year’s end.

Thanks to Roy Williams and his atrocious player development, the former school of thought was the correct one. Davis actually plays for a coach that will develop him and barring an injury he will be a 1st team player by the end of the basketball season as well. I could go down the list of all the freshmen Coach Cal has developed and turned into all-Americans and top draft picks, but history and reality speaks for itself. However, If you take a look at all of Coach Williams’ freshmen you will see that the “Harrison Barnes Effect” is really a result of Ol’ Roy.

North Carolina’s class of 2008 brought in Ed Davis, Larry Drew, Zeller, and Watts. Ed Davis was the most talented of the class averaged 6.7 ppg and forced his way out of Chapel Hill as a sophomore. He doubled his scoring average to 13 ppg in his 2nd year. Tyler Zeller is currently a professional college student, and by the way averaged a stunning 3 ppg as a frosh. Watts and Drew combined for 2.1 ppg in the 1st year. After Larry Drew set the world on fire at UNC he transferred to UCLA.

The class of 2009 brought in mucho taleinto (That's Spanish, B). First off, UNC reeled in David and Travis Wear (transferred during freshman year), Leslie McDonald and Dexter Strickland (Who? And Who?), and the gem of the class John Henson (college student for life). Combined these freshman scored 20 points per game. That’s like, almost what Brandon Knight averaged…by himself.

In 2010 the Tarheels landed Kendall Marshall, Reggie Bullock and THE Harrison Barnes. Kendall Marshall is well on his way to being replaced by someone less mediocre than him. That’s going to be hard to do what with his 6 ppg, 2 rpg. He did average 6 assist per game, however. It’s a good thing he contributed something to that team, because it sure wasn’t with his Jumper or size. I would break down Reggie Bullock’s game, but I have no idea what he looks like or what position he plays. Judging by his stats, he was less useful than Marshall. He averaged 6 and 2, but with 0 assists.

Harrison Barnes is by far the most talented freshman I have named so far and his rookie campaign didn’t start so hot. Barnes averaged 11 points in his first 9 games of the season. Not exactly the all-American type of numbers we all expected. Thus the hype was recounted and expectations were lowered. Barnes did end the season well capping it off with a 40 point performance, but only had a total of 4- 20 point performances for the entire year. He averaged 15 ppg and ended up having a good year, just not a 1st team all-American year.

Anthony Davis will have a much better freshman year than Harrison had because of the position he plays. Barnes had to create much of his offense by himself. Davis will get many of his points from dunks, put backs and alley oops. Also Davis will be an incredible shot blocker in the paint. Add to that, he grew up playing point guard, so he can actually dribble and distribute the rock. I expect no let down from Davis this year, because even in his off games he will still impact his team in a positive way. Is it too early for player of the year talk?

I agree about Davis. I think Davis will benefit playing for Calipari and will have an All-American type year.

As far as North Carolina and Roy, I believe they're a top 2 program and Roy does a great job putting teams together. The man is a winner, and has the record to back it up. He gets kids that fit his program, and is one of the best coaches in the country.

This might be the most uneducated post I have ever read. In fact, I never actually post to these things but I find it hilarious when people are so blindly devote to a certain team that they dont realize things that the entire world can see.

Kids come to UK to go to the NBA and get paid. They dont care about a National title or anything other than themselves. The U of K will not win a title in this decade. They will always have a large number of money hungry recruits but that is about it.

The top North Carolina universities actually have tradition and build programs year over year. That is the case with UNC and Duke.

If you weren't so focused on your team of one-and-dones you might have realized how off base you are. I say might because it's clear you have no credentials to write anything. Just look at the fact that Kendall Marshall isn't a scoring PG and also how the team played drastically better after he took the starting job and you SHOULD see that he is an elite PG.

Reggie Bullock came in with high expectations, but he injured his knee fairly early on and missed the rest of the season.

Harrison Barnes is the most dangerous player in the country in crunch time, period.

It will be fun seeing how UK attempts to handle playing with potentially 5 first round picks in next years NBA draft in Barnes, Zeller, Henson, Marshall, and James McAdoo

Much like he was dangerous in crunch time last year in the regional final. He had UK so scared, they lost in the Final Four just thinking about it.

You forgot to include Tyler Zeller's nose, which is 6 first round picks. Actually, wait! His overhyped game make it 7. That's a lot of first round picks!

I never actually post to these things either, but wow, "Eductaed", the wine and cheese are getting to you. You not only failed trying to make a pretentious user handle, but you left the d off of devoted. I'm sure it would've been in the wrong place anyway.

Now now Chris, Educated is obviously fully devote to UNC and is fully devote to education. To doubt his devote is absurd. I applaud his devote and he has made me want to be more devote to my Wildcats.

Mack, u really don't like the Heels, and I don't either for that matter, but I think u need to stop sensationalizing in attacking them... After all, they won a National title a few yrs back... whereas our Cats have been in a relative drought for a title...Cal is all about the team, and so is Roy.

Come on, UK has the arguably the best College b-ball tradition in the Nation....I wouldn't bet against Cal winning a title this decade, cause u would lose the shirt off ur back

this artlcle is obviously written with loyalty to the undoubtedly good kentucky program. however, while naming the stats of the previous players you failed to mention the players that they were playing behind,(lawson, hansbrough, ellington, deon thompson, wayne ellington) freshman just aren't going to get that much burn. so next time before you attack another program, research both sides of the equation. after all sports is a what have you won lately and frankly kentucky just hasnt won anything lately.

Roy (I'm gonna pass out) Williams is the worst coach in college basketball. I love it when UNC fans come on here and post! If Zeller and Henson couldn't handle Harrellson how in the world do you think they'll be able to handle Davis, or wiltjer, or Jones (they actually couldn't), no chance in hell. Henson couldn't handle Darius Miller he made Henson look silly!

wow whoever wrote this article needs to seriously consider a new major or quit writting for tyhis website. strickland and Henson were both starters last year and mcdonald was the sixth man. All on a team that went to the elite 8. And for those of you who think barnes wasnt clutch against kentucky, he went on an 8-0 run by himself to bring UNC to a tie with kentucky in the final 3 minutes. That is clutch, brandon knight was just better.

UK fans are just pissy cause they haven't won a title in soooooooooo long. They get to the Final Four but can't close the deal, then they have to start over next year cause all their players leave. If you can't win a title with John Wall, you never will. I'd be pissy too, plus the fact that you have to live in Kentucky, nuff said.
