Whatever Happened to Michael Chandler?
I remember when UK was actively recruiting the 4-star big man from Indianapolis, and there was some confusion as to whether a scholarship offer had been extended or not. Some recruiting sites were saying yes, and some no. One blogger told me in a phone conversation that if Kentucky had offered, Chandler would be a Cat by now. So I wondered why there hadn’t been an official offer – the Cats need a big man, Chandler is certainly talented, fairly local, and enamored with Kentucky – what’s the deal?
Zagsblog had an article today that may offer some insight. Chandler’s coach mentioned twice that nothing further will happen with his recruitment until “Chandler improves his test score and academic situation.” Ahhhhhh, it’s all becoming clearer now. Maybe Cal is learning that academic issues present bigger challenges than they’re worth. Maybe Cal is learning that when you have as much talent as most of his recruiting classes, you can afford to be a little pickier. Maybe Cal is learning that it’s not his job to save every troubled youth he comes in contact with.
Or maybe Cal was just holding out for Adjehi Baru, but since he committed to Charleston, Chandler will be back in the running. Yeah, that’s probably more like it.
