Draft Express says Alex Poythress 100% Gone

Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com was asked today on twitter about the current draft status of Kentucky’s Alex Poythress and here was his answer:

I am sure there are many could think there is no way Poythress should leave, but at last look, he is no lower than a #10 pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

Of course, some of you, probably can’t wait till he leaves.

Honestly after seeing him this year I’m not surprised that he’s a hot item for the next draft. He’s got everything you want in a strong forward, and the level of skill he plays at (while not quite at an NBA level) shows room for improvement that could make him a valuable asset in the NBA if he is pushed to his limits and given the right motivation for growth.

I don’t want him to leave, I am tired of one and dones at UK

I agree with you. Besides in my opinion, not one player playing this year are ready for the next level.

….an elite eight a final four and a championship. One and dones obviously doesn’t work. SMH

I dont want any of them to leave but I will never tire of the best recruits coming each year. Are you tired of Championships.final 4s elite 8s. ok I am tired of elite 8s

I know that much money is hard to turn down but look at what has happened to pretty much all of them except Davis and Wall…. They get sent down to the D league for “further growth”. Why not get that growth in college under Coach Cal on a campus where you are a rockstar in a state that hangs on your every word? For most kids college is the best time of their lives, can you imagine what its like for a wildcat basketball player? Stick around and enjoy yourself Alex and i promise you will be rewarded next year when the cats hang # 9 and your draft stock is even higher…

Gilcrest, Cousins, Knight are doing O.K in the league to… I understand what your saying, but its not just Wall and Davis

Also Bledsoe is doing good. Jones would be pllaying but there are too many guys playing the same position on his team.

Why would you want to do your development at college when you could get paid for it in the d league?

  • Scott Spears

Poythress honestly has two choices. He can go pro, take his chances in the D-league, and cash those paychecks. Or he can transfer to another school (any school would love to have him) and pursue a college career. However, as things currently sit, I can’t see him beating Wiggins (if we land him) Wiltjer, Lee, Jon Hood, and James Young for minutes at the SF/PF spots. He definitely would see a drop in minutes from this season. He has some tough choices to make over the next 6 months, and I hope he has the right guys in his ear.

He’s beating Wiltjer and Hood this year in minutes. With that being said, Hood will not get a minute of play next year. Him and Willis will hold the bench down for the whole season. If(big if) we land Wiggins, nobody on this team will take his minutes, thing is, does Cauley-Stein stay? Or Harrow?? With Dakari coming in, still need a big man to bang when he’s not on the floor. Love to see Goodwin, Cayley and Harrow come back. Land Wiggins, Randle or Gordon and it will be nice. Poythress reminds me of T. Jones in his freshman year, up and down all year. Stays, loses a few minutes, and points, but wins a title, seems like a deal. Plus, you left out “Andrew” Harrison at the 3/4 spot. Everyone you named is fighting him for minutes.

Hood is going to graduate. He still has eligibility but I’m told they haven’t applied for it so I have the feeling they will let him graduate and free up a scholarship for next year.

The NBA Draft has been more of a potential ceiling based draft vs a Current Talent based draft for some time now. With that being said, Alex has the potential to being great in the NBA. He will have to spend some time in the D-leagues but I see him getting called back up to be a starter in no time.
I feel any non 4 year player should go directly to the D-league for at least one season. Get paid the minimal salary, To many players are getting drafted, sticking around one season then getting bumped down. I feel that if they just made a rule your going to the D-league more players that are not ready will stay in school for a few more seasons.
With that being said, I do feel if a player that goes to the D-league and shows that he is ready to be called up should be able to be called up giving that X number of games have not been player or the Trade deadline has not been passed.

Some of these comments are hilarious. Alex wouldnt get playing time next year??? Have you watched him at all? He will be a top 10 pick in the draft regardless of his improvement.. if he gets any better he could be a top 3 pick… He is a monster and has an unlimited ceiling. The NBA drafts on potential and Alex has plenty!!! He is a great player already….

Alex is good not great, he could be great if he would actually do something with the ball instead of just passing. If he had more confidence with the ball he would be a top 5 talent because he can shoot, penetrate and play D. But right now all he does is pass, shoot the ball occasionally, and stand there.

    • Todd

You should apply for a G.M Job in the NBA.You knoe more than most who say he is a top 10 pick.Last I figured thats worth about $15,000,000

  • Allan Taylor

Let him go, he’s not worth a crap anyway. Just an overhyped lazy player looking to cash in the NBA. He won’t last more than one contract in the pros and he will be out of the league.

    • http://www.facebook.com/daniel.cannoy.1 Daniel Cannoy

He’s not crap, he is just timid and once he gets some aggression he will be a good pro.
