Sean Woods Could Have Been Right

Former Kentucky Wildcat and current Morehead State basketball coach Sean Woods created quite a stir a couple of weeks ago when he said the following about the current Kentucky Basketball team:

“They didn’t seem like Kentucky basketball players to me. And I’ll leave it at that. I’m a Kentucky basketball player through and through, and there’s just a certain aura about you. “These kids nowadays are just so different. When I was coming up, we were humble. Very humble. I think because of the success that Cal has created – which is not a bad thing, it’s a great thing – it just lets you know what Kentucky basketball is right now. But I’m just one of those kids really, really am a blueblood Kentucky guy at heart. There’s just a certain way and a certain look Kentucky basketball players should have, and not have such a sense of entitlement. I think today, it’s still an honor to wear that uniform.”

Woods took a lot of flack for those comments then, but after the last two games, maybe the “vibe” he had was right.

John Calipari spoke today about the current Wildcats and how they haven’t been going to the gym on their own to work on their game.

“Individual players have to fall in love with that gym. They haven’t yet. So do they have to keep falling until they realize that because you have Kentucky on your chest it makes them play harder? It doesn’t give you any kind of edge.”

Calipari continued, “This team – Alex, and really all of them – you’ve got to understand nothing is given to you. Earn it. You’ve got to fall in love with the gym. Even when we’re not in practice, you love wanting to go over there. We’ve had other guys…Last year they were in the gym all the time. This year they haven’t been in there one day. Well, it’s kind of showing. Hopefully they’ll change.”

When the media walked in the gym today for player interviews, Kyle Wiltjer was doused in sweat from working on his shot. It sounds like Kyle has gotten the message. The question is will anyone follow his lead.

Maybe we as Kentucky fans jumped the gun on Sean Woods’ thoughts of this year’s Kentucky team, because in so many words, John Calipari basically said the same thing today.

I’d say he was spot on. They don’t look like they really want to win. They loose their focus to easy. Play the game for about 8-10 minutes then slack off the other 10. Basketball ADD. As soon as they realize they have to play wand it takes work then look out.,

I agreed with Sean woods from the beginning. As rash as his statements may have been out of context, he was absolutely correct. Somebody had to say it and for two weeks he was the bad guy. Well now we’re out of the top 25, and our guys better be busting their butts in that gym.

The final four team of two seasons ago went through a rough patch too. These guys will get it. Give them a little time and they will amaze us.
