Coaching Carousel: Kentucky Connections Edition

There have been several coaching jobs opening up (as happens this time of year) in which both Billy Gillispie and Tubby Smith’s names have been floated. Coaches “parted ways” with Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Utah, Northern Illinois, Arkansas and Florida Gulf Coast (among others).

It was reported yesterday that Texas Tech had interviewed Gillispie and then that he could get the job as early as Monday. Gary Parrish at CBS is reporting that Gillispie to Texas Tech is a done deal. Billy Clyde was also mentioned with the Oklahoma and Arkansas positions.

Tubby Smith has said “I’m not going anywhere. … I’m going to finish my career [at Minnesota]” but his name has been associated with Arkansas, NC State and Maryland. My favorite take in one article quoted Tubby saying that he was not going anywhere, but if one of the schools called him he would listen.

It was leaked earlier in the week that Bruce Pearl was out at Tennessee, but that was evidently news to Pearl who seemed surprised when the media brought it to his attention. Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton at first apologized to Pearl, but later wavered when asked point blank about Pearl’s return. Pearl’s response? “The announcement yesterday publicly came as a bit of a surprise, but if that’s where we’re at, then that’s where we’re at.”

One last ride on the coaching carousel: Along with Richard Pitino (Rick’s son), both Orlando Antigua and Kyle Macy have been mentioned in connection with the job at Florida Gulf Coast. I wonder if UK will be playing FGC next year as a favor to a former assistant…
